Black Opal

Black Opal is solid opal which has a black or very dark body colour. Black Opals are very highly sought after because of their beauty and rarity. This is the most valuable Australian opal.

Most Black Opal comes from Lightning Ridge in New South Wales with small quantities coming from the opal mines around Mintabie and Coober Pedy.

The dark backgound accentuates the play of colour in the opal and the brighter and sharper the colours, the more valuable the opal.

Semi-Black is similar but has a background colour which ranges from smoky grey to nearly black.

Originally built as a market Hall by settlers in 1897, this grand old Victorian building was restored and extended in 1975 and has since become a major tourist attraction.
