White Opal

White Opal or light opal is solid precious opal distinguished by a white or light background which is opaque.

The term "white" refers to the background or base colour of the stone. Most white opals are not actually white, with the base colour ranging from off white through to a light grey. The degree of transparency varies from opaque, milky white through to semi crystal where the stone is smi translucent. The play of colour can show brilliant fiery flashes in all colours and here, "fire" is used to describe the dominant colour of the stone.

White Opal generally comes from Coober Pedy and Mintabie in South Australia however it is found at all the opal fields in Australia.

Our retail retail shop is at the historic Fremantle markets in Western Australia. Originally built as a market Hall by settlers in 1897, this grand old Victorian building was restored and extended in 1975 and has since become a major tourist attraction.
